NLP Engineer (African Languages)

About the Role

Pioneer natural language processing for African languages. Build models that understand Swahili, Yoruba, Hausa, Amharic, Zulu, and more, enabling technology to speak Africa's languages.

What You'll Do

• ▸ Develop NLP models for African languages
• ▸ Build text classification, sentiment analysis, and NER systems
• ▸ Create and curate training datasets for low-resource languages
• ▸ Implement machine translation systems
• ▸ Build voice-enabled applications and speech-to-text
• ▸ Integrate LLMs with African language support
• ▸ Research and publish findings on African NLP
• ▸ Collaborate with linguists and community contributors

What We're Looking For

• ▸ 3+ years NLP experience
• ▸ Strong Python skills with transformers and NLP libraries
• ▸ Experience with model fine-tuning and transfer learning
• ▸ Knowledge of at least one African language
• ▸ Understanding of linguistic structures and morphology
• ▸ Experience with text preprocessing and tokenization
• ▸ Familiarity with Hugging Face ecosystem
• ▸ Research mindset with attention to detail

Nice to Have

• ▸ Publications in NLP or computational linguistics
• ▸ Experience with speech recognition or TTS
• ▸ Knowledge of multiple African language families
• ▸ Contributions to open-source African NLP projects (Masakhane, etc.)
